High school students Ben and Cody have completed a week’s work experience in the Kellas Teesside office, getting a glimpse into working in the energy sector.
They showed a real interest in learning about our business and industry, and enjoyed spending time with members of our team who shared insights into different careers.
Here’s what they thought of the experience:
Ben: “I learned a lot throughout the week, particularly during a visit to the CATS terminal where we learned about the site’s new way of detecting potential gas leaks through Project Canary. We also found out about Kellas’ H2NorthEast project, an example of a more environmentally friendly energy source. I particularly enjoyed learning about the importance of safety within the project and the lessons that were learned from the Piper Alpha incident. Another activity I enjoyed was researching the importance of transiting to new sustainable energy sources.”
Cody: “I really enjoyed my work experience with Kellas and learned about the Piper Alpha disaster and the importance of safety in the industry. I also learned how a PIG is used in pipelines. It is sent from the offshore CATS Riser Platform through the CATS pipeline, arriving at the CATS terminal where it is removed. Whilst travelling through the pipeline, the PIG cleans the inside of the pipeline and is able to measure its condition and look for any internal corrosion. One thing I particularly enjoyed was creating and giving a presentation on the energy transition as I was able to learn about different energy sources and the advantages and disadvantages of each. I also enjoyed visiting the CATS terminal as it was my first time being on an operational site and seeing the real thing helped my understanding of topics discussed throughout the week. While there I spoke to many people with different roles in the company.”
